Transfer of Responsibility for
Gaerwen, Llangefni, Amlwch Branch Line
Application for an Order under the Transport and Works Act 1992
The Anglesey Central Railway Limited (ACRL) is applying to the Cabinet Secretary for Transport for an Order under the Transport and Works Act 1992 (the Transfer Order) to transfer the statutory rights and responsibility for the 17.5 miles of the branch line from Gaerwen to Amlwch from Network Rail (NR) to ACRL for the purposes of a Community / Heritage Railway. This is in addition and supportive of the Branch line being subject of a 99-year lease between NR and ACRL which was obtained in April 2021.
We are hoping to complete this process within the next 3 to 4 months. The statutory procedure requires consultation with those bodies listed in Schedules 5 & 6 of the Transport and Works (Applications and Objections Procedure) (England and Wales) Rules 2006. We also wish to consult with other local bodies and local residents and businesses who may be interested. We warmly invite you to submit any views, questions, or comments you may have about the proposed Transfer Order to the address shown above.
This document is being delivered to Anglesey County Council, Llangefni Town Council, Amlwch Town Council and the relevant Parish Councils. It will also be put up on the Anglesey Central Railway Website.
- We are not seeking permission for any new development as this is an existing Railway. The Transfer Order is solely about transferring statutory responsibility from NR to ACRL.
- This will enable ACRL to continue with its aim to preserve the line and the operation of Community / Heritage services for the benefit of local residents and visitors to the Isle of Anglesey.
Although ACRL now leases the branch line NR still has the statutory rights and responsibilities for the line. It is those rights and responsibilities that ACRL are applying to have transferred for the duration of the long lease, as it will have the responsibility during this period for the railway operations on the line.
If you have any queries, wish to express concerns, or to support us please contact ACRL, either by Post to Anglesey Central Railway Ltd, The Old Police Station, Holyhead Road, Gaerwen, Ynys Mon LL60 6BL, or by email to daverogers@leinamlwch.co.uk. We are anticipating making this application soon and would appreciate your comments by the 28th February 2025.
